liva’s Market originally dates back to the early 1900’s, when Anthony “Babe” Oliva’s father Nicola opened a market in the current building on East Main Street. When Babe’s father took ill, the market closed. Another local family ran the business for the next twenty years. In 1961 Babe and his brother Joe revived the Oliva family business. Babe and his wife Mary have lived next door ever since. The business has developed into a true family affair. You will usually find Babe behind the counter slicing coldcuts, making homemade sausage, porketta or the house special Italian grinder.  His wife, Mary, can occasionally be found making platters and the famous antipasto which she created in the early 70’s. Her main focus is in the front office and is the backbone of the business operations.

Babe and Mary raised three children, and instilled a work ethic in them at a young age by sending them to help out at the store. Their son Nick lives just down the street with his family; in fact, all of Babe and Mary’s children still live in the Plains area of Milford, where they grew up. Nick attended culinary school and then went to work for Boston Corporate Food Service. He eventually gravitated back to the family business and has run the catering department at Oliva’s since its inception in 1983. In addition to running the retail store, Gina Oliva Tarolli, Babe and Mary’s daughter started the Gift Shop in 1999. The gift shop specializes in home décor, seasonal merchandise and custom-made gourmet gift baskets. “It’s always a treat to visit the gift shop while I wait for my sandwiches to be prepared,” says a customer who has been a regular since she was a little girl. Loyal customers have known the family all of their lives, and bring second and third generations to shop at Oliva’s. Carla Tuttle, Babe and Mary’s youngest daughter is the Director of Food Services for the Milford Public Schools. She is involved with the family business specializing in gourmet catering and you will find her behind the register on weekends greeting customers.  Babe and Mary’s six grandchildren can be seen working in various roles of the business while continuing their education.
